barack obama put in this past week over the next 24 hours. what do you expect we'll see? >> some momentum for mitt romney in those national polls, the daily tracking national polls. he's definitely picked up. also has a lot more excitement with his crowds right now, and it seems like it's re-energized his campaign but what i'll watch are those polls in the key battleground states, places like ohio, virginia, florida, colorado. those have to start closing up for mitt romney, as well. so far they haven't, in fact, there is a new poll out this morning coming out of the university of denver showing barack obama maintains a four-point lead in colorado. >> and it is the battleground states where this race will be won. and lost. >> absolutely. >> very quickly, vice presidential race. any precedent for a vice presidential debate impacting the trajectory of a race? >> not -- probably one of the most serious debate moments ever is that debate moment where lloyd bentson took on dan quayle and said "you're no jack kennedy," but in the end george h.w. bush still won that race. >> george stephanopoulos

[ laughter ] but i know it couldn't have been mitt romney because the real mitt romney's been running around the country for the last year promising $5 drl

begin with the campaign's ed gillespie for mitt romney, robert gibbs for barack obama and, robert, let me begin with you. how much difference did governor romney make wednesday night? >> well, look, george, i think governor romney had a masterful theatrical performance just this past week, but the underpinnings and foundation of that performance were fundamentally dishonest. look, he walked away from the central tenet of his economic theory by saying he had no idea what the president was talking about. ten minutes after the debate even his own staff is walking back his answers on health care and pre-existing conditions, so, look, i don't want to take anything away from what i think again was a masterful, masterful performance by governor romney but i don't think governor romney's positions have changed and fundamentally i don't think the campaign changed. >> what happened to the president wednesday night? you've seen all the reviews, and i'm sure the president has seen the reviews, as well. let's look at that "new yorker" cover there, it shows the empty podium next to mitt romney. the

debate performance, president obama meanwhile on the defensive over his adviser's promise a change before the second debate next week. with just 32 days now till the big vote, every move is critical. as abc's jake tapper reports. >> reporter: before a crowd of 12,000 in denver, the president tried to turn his opponent's polished debate performance into proof of his phoniness. >> when i got onto the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney, but the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. >> reporter: but in the audience many of the president's supporters expressed bewilderment at his passive performance. >> i felt like he should have been more aggressive. >> i didn't understand his strategy and thought, you know, i wondered what was going on. >> reporter: sources tell abc news the president's strategy was a calculated decision not to risk appearing unpresidential by attacking romney on say that video insulting 47% of the country as irresponsible victims. his aides advised hi

performance tonight? >> i think what we saw was the birth of an issue that, with five weeks to go in the campaign, is going to make its appearance, but a big appearance. they debated about this unnamed board of 15 people concerning health care. it actually has a name. it's in obama care, it's the independent payments advisory board. i predict we're going to hear a lot about that in the remaining weeks and that the american people are going to not like what they hear about it. the authority it will exercise unchecked by congress to effectively ration health care. there are arguments for it and against it. but it's going to be debated and it's going to, i suspect, i know political prophesy, i'm committing it, i think it's going to be a remaining part. >> we love it when you commit it, george, and thank you. on one point, both campaigns run, they didn't want their candidates to come in angry or contentious, particularly and they didn't seem rattled. they did seem gracious to each other and i said we would get back to this, the big winner of all, maybe, big bird. there is now a facebo
